Researchers are constantly adding to the literature of Marine Protected Areas. This section features newly released or published research and information of significance to the MPA community.


The Joint Ocean Commission Initiative's third annual ocean policy report card assesses U.S. progress in 2007 toward implementing the recommendations of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, the Pew Oceans Commission, and the actions described in the Administration's U.S. Ocean Action Plan.

An article in the March 2008 "MPA News" notes that Kiribati has doubled the size of its Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA), creating world's largest MPA to date, and discusses the greater conservation opportunities the action brings.

A new publication from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) describes the RSPB's recommendations for the next steps towards comprehensive marine protection throughout U.K. seas, and identifies over 70 nearshore marine areas worthy of protection due to their importance for breeding seabirds.
