Researchers are constantly adding to the literature
of Marine Protected Areas. This section features newly released
or published research and information of significance to the MPA
community.
A new book from the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) describes and maps the North American oceanic and coastal waters, classifying them into 24 marine ecoregions, according to oceanographic features and geographically distinct assemblages of species. The book is intended to provide a framework for collecting and organizing information on these regions, and to encourage a sense of joint responsibility and a collaborative strategic approach to dealing with the challenges of conserving the regions' shared oceans.

A comprehensive ocean management plan for Massachusetts has been designed to protect critical marine resources and to foster sustainable uses in the state's ocean waters. The plan establishes three categories of management areas: a Prohibited Area (coinciding with the Cape Cod Ocean Sanctuary); Renewable Energy Areas; and a Multi-Use Area. The Massachusetts Oceans Act of 2008 called for the Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs to develop such a plan following a scientific and extensive public participation program.

A new article in the open access journal Ecology and Society promotes some changes in perspective for fishery management as part of a growing ecosystem-based approach to marine resource management. It provides background on recent U.S. ocean policy reports and recent state laws which move towards planning for ocean ecosystems as a whole.
